The word "Goodbye" actually came from the old phrase, "God be with you" from around the 16th century. Since then it has been shortened to, "God bye" and then to, "Goodbye". This change from God to good most likely came about from the influence of the phrases "Good day", "Good night", "Good evening", and "Good morning".
